While I do not condone some of the market practices of MS any more than
anyone else, I do feel that it is only fair to point out that many of the
features we like on the Apple were originally developed for Apple by
MS--including the friendly interface--or so the research I did for one of
my classes last year indicated.
I'd love to see that research. I've never read a credible source which asserts
any part of the Mac GUI came from MS. There's a lot of evidence for the Xerox
Star being one of the sources (though even that is denied by some). But I've
never seen anyone with any credibility assert MS came up with anything.
One of the major reasons for the legal
battle over Windows is the fact that Apple had a contract with MS to
prevent them from duplicating code they had developed for Apple. Apple
felt that the Windows interface came too close to the same code.
Actually, the battle was over the fact that MS was using code and interface
techniques in their Mac applications that Apple had developed, and Apple felt
that they had a right to prevent MS from using the same type of interface code
in a competing product. The judge (obviously) disagreed.
Have fun,
