I'm new to this list but I recieved this message with my first batch of
mail, and being a technical illustrator thought to answer.

On a mac I think choice would be Adobe Illustrator or Freehand depending on
your background.
Isodraw is another more specific package and is somewhat more technical,
the others being more graphic based.

Illustrator has a companion package called Dimensions for the 3D material
and while not in the same class as Infini-D etc. still produces excellent
results.  Personal experience this.

On the pc the program most people seem to use is Autocad, although on both
platforms there are a range of options depending on whether you want CAD or
graphics ability.

Here is part of the problem for people choosing systems and programs:
Generalisation 1.
People working in offices use pc's and those in studios use mac's.
Generalisation 2.
People using Pagemaker use Freehand and those using Quark use Illustrator.
Generalisation 3.
Everyone thinks CAD stands for Technical Illustration. (Actually it stands
for Computer Aided Design)
