In defense of the people on the "worker bee" end of MIS (one of which my
husband was before he got sick of this very thing), the network techs
know this and hate it as much as everyone else.
The way to figure out if your shop fits Bonnie's model is to watch the turnover
rate. Good network techs have little trouble finding places to work. If there's
a high turnover rate in your tech support staff, then you can bet that almost
all technological issues are being decided emotionally, and that the source of
your problem is management, not the techies.
OTOH, if you're having those problems and the faces don't change, then perhaps
your best bet is to polish the resume, as in that case you not only have
management against you, but either the techs are as well or they don't care
about their customers (and either way, it's a sure sign of a bottomless well of
confrontations).
