Mark Boyer and Who Wants the OED for Reference?
Mark, you're absolutely right. I've NEVER used the OED for technical reference.
But it reminds me of two lifetimes ago (i.e. university) when I could afford to
pore for an hour over the nuances of a word for a paper. In fact, I used to read
it as a novel, though the plot was rather static and the characters were
'metabolically challenged'. Sometimes we just want something because it makes us
feel good. How about middle-aged men who drive red sportscars? Practical be
damned! :>)
