Subject:Beth Vollbach's "pretty little head" incident From:Patrick O'Connell <titanide -at- MICRO -dot- ORG> Date:Fri, 9 Jun 1995 07:08:33 -0400
Beth, it's called political correctness. If I guessed that you're, um, not
a Generation Xer, that the woman who reacted positively to "pretty little
head" was close to your own age, and the one who didn't wasn't, how would
I be doing?
I confess that I think the sentiments that spawned this
now-REALLY-ANNOYING zeitgist are admirable. For example, not referring to
native North Americans, the ones who were here LONG before Cristofo
Colombo, as "Indians" but rather as First Nations people. North American
"Indians" have nothing to do with India, at least not in recorded history!
And "developmentally challenged" doesn't make me throw up because, for one
thing, an aunt of mine has Down's syndrome (also, "retard" was quite a
common derogatory name in my childhood -- there are no positive
connotations to it whatsoever for me). But "height challenged," "weight
challenged," et al. -- or calling someone who does photocopying all day an
"imaging specialist"?
...'scuse me...not feeling so good...Uh-oh. Gotta run.
