A few years ago Battelle produced a Procedure Writing
manual for DOE. In the pre-chapter components, the
writers described their position on sexist language.
They said that while "he" might be perceived by the
reader as sexist language, they intended no offense.
However, they (the writers) refused to be burdened
by the s/h/it trap. Everybody in the manual is a "he."
This is a Battelle approach, which I may or may not
support.
