DESCRIPTION:
The Business Intelligence Division at Cognos has an opening for a senior
technical writer. You will be responsible for preparing and/or leading the
preparation of online and hard copy documentation for one or more Business
Intelligence products. A Senior Technical Writer will work under the
direction of his/her manager or the lead writer for assigned projects.
Preference will be given to candidates with strong writing and creative
backgrounds.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Researches, writes, updates, revises, indexes, and reviews both online and
hard copy documentation for one or more assigned projects. Works
independently requiring minimal supervision from the Business Intelligence
Publications Manager or lead writer for the project.
* In consultation with his/her manager, assesses the overall documentation
requirements for assigned projects and prepares all or part of the
documentation proposals.
* Researches customer and Marketing priorities as it impacts his/her
assigned projects.
* Ensures the quality, accuracy, and consistency of projects or assignments
under his/her control. Includes coordinating technical and editorial reviews
and ensuring required changes are made to the documentation.
* Administers projects or assignments under his/her control. Coordinates
deliverables, delivery dates and schedules in consultation with his/her
manager or the lead writer for the project. Monitors progress and reports
any issues that may impact the quality or delivery of documentation. Ensures
that project deliverables are met on schedule.
* Independently guides and directs one or more writers for assigned
projects, providing both technical and editorial guidance. For more junior
writers, provides day-to-day supervision. Provides input into performance
appraisals for assigned writers.
* Recommends optimal allocation of staff, equipment, and other resources, as
necessary to achieve the project objectives.
* Contributes suggestions for new documentation and/or procedures for
improving or enhancing the preparation of the documentation.
* Promotes positive, cooperative interaction within your team, the Business
Intelligence Publications group, and the entire Business Intelligence Division.
QUALIFICATIONS:
* University degree or equivalent
* Computer Science, Technical Writing, Humanities, Social Sciences, or
Arts, preferred
* Journalism or Business considered
* Professional courses in information development and computing a
definite asset
* Four or more years of technical documentation experience or an equivalent
combination of education and experience
* Supervisory experience
* Knowledge of the PC environment, specifically Windows and Windows applications
* Experience preparing online documentation for Windows is an asset
