I might choose to avoid calling it anything at all. My preference is to focus
on functionality rather than focus on the objects of the software. IMHO, when
you talk about the marquee, you are focusing on an object of the software
rather than the focus of the user's attention, which is what is inside the
marquee.
Here are examples of phrases that avoid calling the marquee anything at all:
"Select an area to enlarge by clicking and dragging a box over the area."
"To move the area you selected, ..."
