September Meeting
What's New in Technical Communications Education
Four speakers will talk about various aspects of education in
preparation for work as a technical communicator, including what
students are learning, what programs are available in the San
Francisco Bay Area, how the requirements of hiring managers are
evolving, the STC's perspective on education, and how education can
help you.
Rick Coykendall is a San Francisco STC Board member and is currently
enrolled in the De Anza College Technical Communications Certificate
Program. He has five years of experience marketing professional
speakers, and prior to that, taught English as a Second Language in
Taipei, Taiwan.
George Hayhoe is President of George H. Associates. He is Associate
Fellow of the STC, and his current position in the STC is Assistant
to the President as Chairman of the Recognitions Advisory Committee.
George has taught writing at Virginia Tech and is currently an
instructor at the U.C. Berkeley Extension. He holds a Ph.D. from the
University of South Carolina.
Rich Julius is Senior Manager of Documentation at Oracle Corporation
and a U.C. Berkeley Extension instructor. He will be teaching three
classes in writing for the fall term. Rich is also a member of the
Technical Writing Advisory Committee for the U.C. Berkeley
Extension. The Committee is putting together a study program for
technical writing and will eventually create a certificate program as
well. Rich holds an M.F.A. from the University of Michigan. He has
taught both creative and business writing at the University of
Michigan and at the City College of San Francisco prior to teaching
at the U.C. Berkeley Extension.
Lu Rehling coordinates the Technical and Professional Writing Program
at San Francisco State University. She has over 15 years of industry
experience working as a writer, editor, and communications manager.
For the past five years, Lu has been teaching technical and
professional writing at the college level and has published writings
on related research and teaching issues. She holds A.B., A.M., and
Ph.D. degrees in English from the University of Michigan.
Questions from the audience are welcome.
