You don't say whether the "poor sod" is using a PC or a Mac.
If you're using PCs (or can transfer the files to a PC), you
might want to look into Paint Shop Pro. It's a $69 shareware
program from Jasc Inc. (http://www.jasc.com/psp.html), and it
does many of the things that Photoshop does.
