Interviewing skills keep showing up as primary. Other than
trial and error (which is the way I learned to talk to
scientists, businesspeople, etc.),
how does one go about honing this skill?

Interviewing skills are *critical*. So much so, that six years ago I
took 24 days of intensive communications training. The most helpful
pieces were:

* The Meta Model

* Rapport Skills

You can read about these (and other topics) in a book called
Influencing with Integrity by Genie Z. Laborde. In addition, I offer a
training course where you can learn how to:

* Use 5 specific criteria to help you and your client define goals
more clearly.

* Create instant rapport -- the mainstay of two-way communication

* Recognize cues that signal the need for more specific information

* Ask questions that get the specific type of information you need

* Learn the question order that helps you get accurate information
fastest

* Determine your clients' conditions for accepting your work or
product -- *before* delivery
