Basic English, which was tried shortly after WW 2 and flopped, took the
opposite approach. It had a small vocabulary (800 words, 1,000 for the
Bible) and used compounds and overloaded words very heavily.

e.g. The sun didn't rise and set. Instead it came up and went-down.
