Re: 2-3 month Contract Tech Writer position at VLSI Technology, San Jose, CA to
develop documentation for in-house cost accounting system. Start date: March 1
1996.
VLSI Technology in San Jose, a semiconductor manufacturer specializing in
high complexity ASIC designs, is implementing a cost accounting system which we
have been developing in-house over the last year. We plan to go live on our new
system (which we have named Praxis) on March 30 this year, and are looking for a
writer to create two sets of documentation for this.
The first and most critical of these is system documentation which will explain
and highlight programing aspects of the system and will be used primarily by the
system administrator who will be responsible for the maintenance and
modification of the system. This documentation will also be used by our CPA
firm in their independant review of Praxis which will take place in June of this
year. Their review of the system will focus on establishing the integrity of
the system and the data the system provides, as well as review of the adequacy
of system security.
Praxis runs on a PC network using Microsoft Access, and retrieves lot tracking
event data from our manufacturing system (Promis version 5.0) to calculate costs
and variances. The output from the system is typical cost accounting reporting
of value added in the manufacturing process at standard costs, yield variance,
ending inventory valuation, etc.. The programer is a VLSI employee, and he
would be the main person that the tech writer would work with in developing this
documentation.
The second documentation would be a guide for finance users of Praxis, and would
focus more on the cost accounting aspects of the system, highlighting how to
execute extracts, process events, close the system at month end, and review the
information available on reports, and how to get other types of information from
the system. Documentation will need to include how to revise standards by
modifying tables and cost algorithms within Praxis. The tech writer would work
primarily with the Cost Accounting Manager on this documentation.
Seeking a tech writer with at least 7 years writing experience, with an
understanding of computerized accounting systems and enough technical background
to be able to understand the programing aspects of the system by working with
the developer. Knowledge of semiconductor manufacturing processes would be very
helpful. We anticipate a 2 - 3 month full time assignment, and we would be able
to provide an office at our San Jose site for the person (1251 McKay Drive; we
are in North San Jose between highways 880 and 680 near the Milpitas border.
Our closest well known landmark is the Great Mall in Milpitas which is about 2
miles from our office.)
We will be talking to interested persons between now and March 1. Contact me if
you meet the qualifications and are interested in the assignment.
