Somebody had a question about transparent .gifs. I've since
deleted the message; sorry about that.
Anyway, the consensus of a couple of HTML novices is that the
color you selected to be the transparent color is probably not
recognized on the other system you were talking about (16-bit?).
So black is either a default or the closest color the 16-bit
system chose to substitute for the color you specified.
If this makes absolutely no sense...well, I said it was a novice
opinion!
