Invitation to Graduate Students
===============================
Graduate students in fields related to computing, documentation, and
interface design are invited to submit papers for a special graduate
student symposium at the 1996 ACM-SIGDOC conference. The purpose of this
symposium is to highlight exemplar graduate student research or thesis
work.
The symposium will include a presentation of three papers followed by a
commentary by a discussant. Participants and the audience also will
engage in a round-table discussion about research and professional issues
that concern graduate students. The author of the best student paper will
receive all expenses paid for the conference registration and hotel
accommodations and a complimentary copy of the Proceedings.
Themes and Topics for Presentations
===================================
Students are encouraged to submit proposals for papers on empirical
research or research-supported theory. Proposals should focus on inquiries
into one of following pressing areas of study:
* Audience and Task Analysis
* Implications of New Types and Processes of Documentation
* Visual Rhetoric and Design
* Communication Technologies
* Usability of Print and Online Texts
* International and Cross-cultural Issues
* Emerging Professional and Organizational Roles
* The Social, Cultural and Political Context of Technology Transfer
* Collaboration and Team-Based Projects
* Research on Research: Crossing Disciplines and Models of Inquiry
Guidelines for Proposals
==========================
Please submit a 500-1000 word description of your session, clearly
highlighting your problem and thesis. Discuss your main points, the
evidence that you will use to support your claims, and the significance of
your claims for the field.
All presentations are limited to 20 minutes.

Review of Proposals

The graduate student program committee will review submissions during the
month of July. It will inform people about whether their paper has been
accepted by August 1.
The committee will notify the award winner by August 1 and officially
recognize him or her at the conference.
