The esteemed Michael Maloney kindly quoted me as saying:
>Pleasant dreams! When you wake up, try fitting both a writer and an
>illustrator into a budget that has room for only half of one or the other, but
>not a whole one of either.
And responded thusly:
>A Swiss Army Knife is good for many things, but excellent at none. I'd hate
to sit down at a first class restaurant and be handed a spork.<
To which I reply:
But I do not have a "first class" restaurant budget to use -- that "is what
it is"! The places my budgets go may offer a spork (here in Hawaii it's more
likely to be chopsticks). In far too many companies, the only people with
anything better than a Swiss Army knife are company cost-cutters, who all bear
sharp axes for chopping down towering budgets, and cutting head counts.
That "Swiss Army knife" is the difference between *some* illustrations vs
*no* illustrations.
<various pleasantries, interesting comments, and a kind offer to provide an
"honest" critique of technical illustrations -- keep him in mind, people! --
snipped>
Good, interesting discussions your post invoked, Michael.
