I guess it depends on whether you look at all these bastardizations as
varying "standards", or merely as options for one "standard", no? In
any case, it comes down to the same thing in the end...

Aye, there are certainly more "stable" formats to be used (note: that
doesn't apply to bitmaps either, as they can vary between platforms as
well - OS/2 and Windows bitmaps differ by only one byte in the header,
but it makes them effectively incompatible).
