TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I am documenting a system that will be used by tax assessors, among others.
This group uses the word "value" in a specific way. I had been using the
word for data or information or search criterion--whatever you would put
into a database field.
Examples:
The format for each statement is:
ATTRIBUTE OPERATION VALUE(S)
ATTRIBUTE: NEIGHBORHOOD
OPERATION: =
VALUE: HIGHLAND PARK
Multiple values must be separated by a comma.
At a recent user group session, I noticed that a few users stumbled. Do any
handy synonyms occur to any of you? I haven't come up with a satisfyingly
concise alternative yet (the three alternatives I listed above--data,
information, search criterion--don't quite work).
Thanks!
John
