For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Late, but I have to say that I think there is something amiss with any manual
that has more than a half-dozen appendices. In my view the appendix in only
supposed to contain supplementary reference material, such as a glossary,
resource address list, schematics.
If there really are 26, 60, certainly they should be in a separate volume. I
think the reader needs that to parallel the descriptive text.
My preference is for A1, A2, A3... where A simply means appendix. Numbering
can refer to the chosen scheme whether it is chapter numbers or section
numbers. So you could have A1.1 for an appendix relating to section 1.1.
Since most routines sort numerically before alpha, you still have these listed
at the end of the table of contents.
