This is a very microscopic view of our profession, IMHO.

I got my first job as a technical writer in aerospace directly because of
what I was doing as in public relations at the psychiatric hospital for
which I worked; it had nothing to do with my degree.

I was tasked to produce a video on space spin-off medical technologies for
a local medical conference. Because of my past experiences, my interest and
volunteer involvement in the space program ...and my being the right person
in the right place at the right time ... I was granted an interview, and
was eventually hired as a member of one of the technical staffs in the
space program. I've since moved into other areas, including
telecommunications and software documentation. I chalk the process up to
the flow of life ... I think everything I have ever done has gotten me
where I am today, directly or indirectly.

I attribute my own success to my tenaciousness to *always* work in a job I
love and a persistence to learn everything I can in order to do my job
right. I think having a  positive attitude has helped me more in life than
my degree or my experiences, to tell you the truth, and that attitude
includes offering help to others who want to break into this field instead
of shunning them with pomposity.
