Writing instructors I've had always recommended against inserting full
sentences into other sentences, even when the inserted sentence is enclosed
in parentheses. Instead, they suggested placing the parenthesized sentence
*after* the other sentence. The parenthesized sentence then gets a period,
placed right before the closing parenthesis.
