I have written for biotech instrument manufacturers for eight years.
The manuals I've worked on have been for hardware and the software
that interacted with the hardware and analyzed research results. Often
I had to learn the significance the instrumentation contributed to the
latest research developments, which can be fascinating. My college
background in biology and chemistry certainly helped there.

On the other hand, I've looked into working at pharmaceutical
companies but never worked in one. They are generally developing drugs
or other substances for eventual human or animal ingestion. The
documentation they need is more directed towarn fulfilling FDA
requirements for drug testing, which can be very tedious. While
technical, it has nothing to do with writing procedures for users.

>>I am a student studying English at BYU. I am hoping to write for a
company in the medical industry when I graduate. Unfortunately, the
technical writing class that I am taking now focuses much more on the
writing of computer manuals and the like because that is the are of
my instructor's expertise. I am seeking any information you can
offer on possible internships or even pharmaceutical or biotech
companies that might hire a recent graduate.<<
