If memory serves, Registered or (R) is short for Registered Service Mark
or for some "mark" other than Trade Mark. Trade marks are used for
products; service marks are used for services - I used it to register
the logo for a day care chain, for instance. It is used when you
register the design, along with an explanation of why it's unique, with
the same office where you register a trademark. The (R) means that it
has been registered, and thus is protected from duplication and use by
others.
The same rules apply to it as apply to (TM).
