Subject:Various ?s on Breaking In... From:SOPHIE CHRISTOFF <SCHRISTO -at- CSCC -dot- EDU> Date:Tue, 3 Jun 1997 13:39:49 -0400
I'm breaking out of my longterm lurker-hood to ask your advice on a
few topics...I am relocating to Indiana(Bloomington) and am hoping
to break into tech writing/editing/etc. My degree in in International
Studies (focuses quite heavily on research/analysis/writing) and
positions since gradauting have focused increasingly heavily on
writing --- a lot of advertising/marketing, annual reports, also
contracts, policy and procedures. I'm write well by nature,
style and presentation have improved with experience in the
"real world", but I have no formal specific writing education.
I'm pretty proficient on Word, tons of experience in other applications, working like heck to come up to speed on
Pagemaker. I've read with great interest posts responding to other newbies but have some
specific questions of my own...
>>Can anyone fill me in on the state of tech writing in Southern
Indiana (Indy--Columbus--Bloomington)? Anyone have any
experience with companies in the area?
>>Suggestions on how to make myself more marketable?
>>My mother in law, also subscribed to this list (Hi Mom!) feels
someone well versed in PageMaker and semi computer literate
should be able to work in FrameMaker relatively easily. Anyone
concur/disagree?
>>What are the legal/etiquette issues surrounding the use of
documents prepared for my current employer as samples in my
portfolio?
For fear of being flamed for having the longest post ever, I'll leave
it at that. Thanks everybody for your posts. As an utter newbie,
this post is a real God-send.
Thanks again!
Sophie Christoff
