Umm, gosh, sorry, although I am not a resident of Portland, and it isn't
*exactly* always considered a *coastal* city, I should point out that the
Mack-Daddy of independent bookstores is on the web. Powell's has been
around since 1971, I believe, which makes it somewhat oldish, and
definitely had a cafe long before certain other bookstores made them
fashionable.
Powell's actually has six different stores, including one dedicated
entirely to technical books. The "Who We Are" link gives a little bit of
factual info about the place, but let me just say that Powell's is one of
two places I *must* visit whenever I'm in the Portland area. In fact, my
wife (a fellow bookworm) and I spent part of our honeymoon at Powell's!
Of course, my intention is not to start a urination contest, but merely to
add to the list of valid alternatives if you are looking to support an
independent bookstore but watch your wallet. Best of all if you live in the
Portland area!
