Subject:Move Over Amazon From:Daniel Wise <dewise -at- IX -dot- NETCOM -dot- COM> Date:Fri, 6 Jun 1997 19:44:25 -0500
Colleagues,
Much has been posted concerning on-line book sellers. Here is one more
little wrinkle. According to a story on NPR's All Things Considered
Wednesday, June 4, Barnes & Noble and Borders are about to come on line to
give Amazon direct competition. Also, FWIW, an Alabama corporation, Books-
a-Million, is struggling. Their stock price has been in decline for the
past year, dropping from around 18 to something like 6. These folks are not
your mom-and-pop corner bookstore; they are fairly large, but not large
enough to keep up with Barnes & Noble, Borders, Doubleday, etc. But other
smaller booksellers in Birmingham, AL, seem to be holding their own.
Now the question becomes whether Amazon can withstand the competition from
the "big dogs" on line.
