Count me as another vote against certification because it adds a
needless layer of bureaucracy without providing significant value.
Specifically, certification will not prove the value of the tech
writer's output, nor will it demonstrate to a prospective employer that
*this* tech writer with *this* set of skills is a good match for *my*
tech writing needs.
Certification may give a warm, fuzzy feeling to the tech writer, but a
well-prepared portfolio should go much farther toward obtaining that
next job or next contract.
And for those tech writers concerned that the poor practitioners give
the good writers a bad name, well, bad doctors don't do much for that
profession but they certainly have enough layers of certification there!
