Which is probably the ethical response.

Personally, I would simply have been very restrained, possibly said some of
the little good that did apply. Also, it would have depended on the
candidate. If you KNOW this person's likely to have a nervous breakdown in
your environment, you might be just a little more negative than if you have
someone like the son of a steelworker I once worked with, who basically
programmed like his father had probably built buildings: few words, one
rivet at a time, and, hey, a job's a job.
