Here's a possible solution:
I presently use Word 6. Make screen captures as .tif files. The book
file is very large; my recent 35-page book was 42-Meg until ....
I converted the word 6 document to word 97 then to HTML which did a
batch conversion of all .tif files to .gif and reduced the file size to
about 6Meg.
Do the conversion after all captures have been manipulated to final
stage because .gif files don't lend themselves to changes.
It could be done with fewer steps, but the quality was best in this
manner
