Subject: Resume and Portfolio Tips

I've been asked to do a page of resume and portfolio tips for my STC
chapter's web page (talk about the blind leading the blind...)

Anyway, if anybody on the list would care to contribute any
suggestions,
I would be very grateful for the input. All suggestions will be
acknowledged on the finished page, and I will post all the
suggestions
in one message if there's enough interest.

My suggestion:

If you have a personal web site you're proud of, be sure to include
the URL in your resume. You might also consider putting some portfolio
samples on your web site-not as a substitute for a hard copy
portfolio, but in "addition to." If a prospective employer is
intrigued by your resume, he/she can get a "sneak preview" of your
work immediately. Nothing like instant gratification for a hungry
customer.

You might even consider putting your resume itself online-again in
addition to the printed copies you send out. Online resumes are fairly
easy to update and customize. If a job add offers an e-mail address as
one way to contact the employer, you can e-mail the URL for your
resume in addition to sending out a hard copy by snail mail. This
gives you the advantage of putting your resume in the prospective
employer's hands days before competing resumes get there. Of course,
this advantage only applies if most of the competition doesn't get the
same idea. This strategy will probably work best for employers who are
in the communications field, or at least do a lot of online
documentation. If the employer is in some apparently unrelated field
... say medical supplies, it may not help you much.
