Thanks to suggestions from Becca < rp51 -at- chrysler -dot- com > and fellow Ottawa
resident Raymond Chenier < ray -at- peac -dot- com >, I tried the following:

Under Insert/Object/Create_From_File, I selecting the checkbox "Link to
file"

Voila!

Instead of 5.8 MB, my file was now only 2.58 MB.

...but that's still 2.54 MB bigger than it ought to be.

So I tried selecting both the "Link to file" checkbox and the "Display as
icon"
checkbox.

Now this seemed to work. My file size was 57 kB. Now, of course, only icons
appeared on screen. But surely the document must print with the graphics?

No such luck. IT PRINTED THE ICONS!

What's more, you'd expect the program to let you do a right mouse-button
click on
the icon and change the bloody link to one that displayed and printed the
gif. No such luck. When you do right mouse-button click on the icon, you
do indeed get an item in the menu called "Update link". However, "Update
link"
seems to do nothing. When you try context-sensitive help on it, you get the
wrong help dialog, one that says "Update fields button. Update the records
in
the selected database field". Oh sigh, another developer who forgot to tell
the online help writer when he (or she) changed the ID numbers. Now there's
another menu item called "Edit Paint Shop Pro image link". You'd think it
would
allow you to edit the link to the Paint Shop Pro image, wouldn't you? No,
wrong again. It brings up Paint Shop Pro for you to edit the image. Oh sigh,
another case of a developer not coding to spec!

The only way around the "stupid icons" problem seems to be to
re-insert the gif files, this time without the boxes selected. Didn't anyone
at Microsoft ever hear of the concept of "update"?

Anyone else have any solutions?
