Subject:MSWord file size problem From:geoff-h -at- MTL -dot- FERIC -dot- CA Date:Fri, 20 Jun 1997 16:14:39 -0500
Carl Stieren reported a problem with a Word file ballooning
in size when he inserted a graphic. Carl, one possible
problem might be that you have "fast save" selected in the
Word preferences. This option appends all changes to the
end of the file, rather than saving the whole file from
scratch, and it's a dangerous and unreliable option in my
experience. I'd wager that Word isn't smart enough to store
the graphics file properly within the main file if this
option is selected, but I can't confirm this.
Another thought: what resolution is the graphics file? If
it's a hi-res scan, with a high color depth, Word may
simply not know how to handle this properly... Word simply
isn't designed to handle color files as well as a proper
desktop publishing application. Downsampling the file to
the minimum resolution and color depth you actually need
for final output might resolve the problem.
