I was wondering, for those of you who use FrameMaker 5.1.1 or 5.1.2,
what laser printers work best with the program, in your experience? I am
just starting to use the 5.1.1 version for Windows 95, and can acquire a
new printer to use with Frame (as well as printing Word Files, etc.).
Currently we have a HP LaserJet 4 (mPlus ?).

Jeffrey:

Since printing is handled by the operating system, the program you're
running doesn't really enter into the question. If the printer's working
with your system, it should work with Frame.

What you need in a printer depends on what you're going to do. Here's a
few general comments:

1.) A postscript printer is useful, but not essential--if you want to
create postscript files, you can simply install any driver you want and
set it to print to files.

2.) If you're going to be using lots of fonts, or if the printer's
networked, at least 16 megs of RAM minimizes delays.

3.) Unless you're printing strictly in-house, don't select the printer
on the basis of its installed fonts.

4.) Don't worry about stats like pages per minute: that figure varies
depending on what you're printing and your memory.

5.) If you're going to print in-house, make sure that the resolution is
at least 600 x 600 dpi _without_ enhancement. If you have the money,
there are some 1200 x 1200 dpi which give an added finish to your
documents.

6.) If you only do occasional color pages, consider buying an inkjet for
color, and a black and white printer for regular use. Color laser
printers are very expensive still, although they have come down in price
in the last few years.

Hope these ideas help!
