In case you want to bring a little history to your study, the Oxford
Companion to the English Language points out that the Flesch of the
Flesch Readability Formula is Rudolf Flesh, author of The Art of
Readable Writing (1949) which is still around in the second-hand
stores and I think in paperback.
Flesch based the technique on work by L.A. Sherman, author of
Analytics of Literature (1893).
The Fog or Gunning Fog Index, the Oxford Companion tells us, is the
product of Robert Gunning, author of The Technique of Clear Writing
(1968).
