Personal computers were on the market some time before IBM came on the scene.
Apple had one in by 1980 or so, and there were a whole raft of Zilog and
Motorola-based machines running CPM and other OSs that were the predecessors
of IBM's DOS.

Take a look at IBM's list of trademarks. Embellished forms of
"PC" and "Personal Computer" are there, but not PC or Personal
Computer itself. IBM's list is at:
I believe IBM coined the term "Personal Computer" in the 8088 days,
but it quickly became "PC" in the trade press and then generic a la
Kleenex. If Apple and even Sinclair (!) have similar lists, I'd check
them too if you're uncertain...
