Pagemaker 5.x and later WILL allow this IF:
- Place the front matter in a "chapter" file
- Place any page 1 and following into another chapter file. Set the
Document Options to start at one and do not renumber.
- connect the "chapters" using the Utility/Book list function
- Generate the TOC.
- If you have less than 6.0, don't even think about printing a booklet
sort of any type :(
- If you have less than 6.5x, expect to do some extra editing to fix
some problems.
Problem: You can't sort the book into any printed order with a PM
version less than 6.0; anything earlier maintains the chapters and
connections, but can't actually do any joined printing.
Solution: Prior to 6.x, it IS possible to print whole books unsorted;
a print-to-file will allow the output to be sorted by a tool like
Pagewise (your service bureau may have it) to do a printer layout
from.
Problem: Even with 6.0, there are many problems with sorting multiple
chapters. The worst is stories "break" across pages instead of
flowing. This is a noticeable problem if you use full justification or
paragraph styles with first-line indents since both of these will
occur when the paragraph "breaks" in the middle.
Solution: Pagemaker 6.5x however allows mixed chapters AND keeps
flows.
Solution:
- Buy PM 6.5x and have full imposition capabilities (using the same
strategy above).
Does anyone here know much about Pagemaker? We can't see a way of including
the TOC and front matter in the publication, but nevertheless starting the
actual page numbering after them. Is this possible? The problem is that the
publication all has to be done in the one shot as it's being turned into a
giant .PDF file.
Well, if anyone has any ideas I'd be most grateful.
Cheers,
John.
