Glenn:
Traditionally, typesetters would _regularly_ place a quad space at the
end of a sentence and this became known as "regular spacing." The use
of a normal space between sentences was known as "French spacing" [or
"English spacing" across the channel].
There have been studies indicating that regular spacing helps the
reader understand the material and technical disciplines still tend to
use regular spacing. However, French spacing is so much easier for the
desktop operators that regular spacing now is only used for projects
which need a traditional, elegant flavor.
