TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I received a few messages from people interested in establish a Technical Writer Trade Union (an Internet-based one, of course!).
OK
To do it, we need:
1) A specific mail list to be used as "virtual headquarter"
2) A list of the partecipating people
3) A secretary and/or a leading staff
4) A program
5) A WWW site where publish our documents and publicize our activities.
Possible solutions:
1) I think Eric can give us a few suggestions regarding how to start a new mail list (or, even, he can start it for us).
2) Start from my name and collect the other ones from TECHWR-L and WINHLP-L with a brodcast invitation message.
3) We can vote the secretary and the staff via e-mail. IMHO, I would like to have Alexia Prendergast and Eric Ray as our leading staff.
4) The leading staff should prepare a draft of the program and submit it to the subscriber's judgment via e-mail.
5) I think we should rent a few Mb from a cheap ISP for our needs. I'm personally willing to pay a (small) annual fee to our trade union for this task. A possible alternative is to find a friendly ISP willing to host our pages.
Any comment is welcome.
P.S. Of course, I'm speaking for myself, not for my company.
