If you are an aspiring technical writer, I think that the most important
thing to do is to get some experience on your resume. People take you a lot
more seriously once you've got at least one technical writing job listed
there. Many more doors open for you. For this reason, if you can, look for
both contract and fulltime work and accept whichever position that comes
along first and that pays the bills. If it happens to be the sort of
position that you'd prefer not to do, keep in mind that you aren't stuck in
it forever, and that doing that type of work will not typecast you or make
it difficult for you to get the other type of work. Once you can advertise
some tech writing experience on your resume, you can then look for the
kind of work you prefer.
