It could also mean you're very selective about who your friends are, and
careful about use of the word 'friend'.
Even though I always play the solitary curmudgeon on a project, I've somehow
accumulated solid relationships from each project (which came in handy when I
needed references lately). I don't hangout with these people or go to their
houses, but whatever you call such relationships, they've endured over years
and on a rock solid basis (and led to other work, too.)
That may be all an interviewer means by 'friends' and sufficient claim to
having made a few on the job. But some of us do use the word in its strict
sense with great care.
