I work for a High Tech computer software firm and have faced the same delima
particularly since Engineers like somethinf they can hold. However, remembering
that all sections titles are in the TOC and can be refernced from there for
those you print the manual helps solve the delimma. If the majority are used to
and use on-line then I would skip the page reference and let those few who
print the manual use the TOC to determine where the section is that is being
referenced. Like you, I agree that going without page numbers is cleaner.
