Well first of all, an intranet is not a web site any more than the
Internet is. Rather, it's an internal network based on Internet
technology, ie. TCP/IP, rather than (or in addition to) standard
peer-to-peer or client/server designs. This allows use of other standard
Internet tools such as newsreaders and mailers, which is particularly
handy if the system includes an outside Internet connection. Your
company may also want to run their own POP server, or set up internal
newsgroups on an NNTP server.

Another standard use for an intranet is access to a corporate database.
Rather than everyone needing access to it running something like Access
<gag>, the database is linked to the webserver, and is accessed via web
browser on the client side. This would normally be protected from the
outside, but may also be made accessible to a degree from an Internet
link for customers to get information, place orders, etc.
Your friend and mine,
Matt
