Mike Donoghue wondered about sources of information on how
effective software improves user performance. Mike, check
out the recent issue of _Intercom_ for an excellent
overview (Craig Marion, "What is performance-centered
design", Intercom, Aug./Sept. 1997, p. 9-13). You can also
look for books by Gloria Gery, who pioneered the field. Try
a web search on "electronic performance support systems" or
"performance centered design" and see what turns up.
