One of the most definitive books of abbreviations, initialisms, acronyms, and
units of measure that I have found is ANSI Standard Y1.1, provided it has not
been withdrawn since ASME shut down their standards program several years ago.
It not only contains the abbreviations, it gives forms for both text and
drawings, which are not necessarily the same, since lettering on drawings is
generally all caps rather than upper and lower as in text. Thus the
abbreviation for inch(es) per second might be IPS on an engineering drawing
and ips in text, tables, and graphs.
