Thanks to all who responded to my note. I had many comments to pass on
to my friend in the UK.
I am pleased that most of you resisted the temptation to stray into
adjacent political, social, and historical issues. :-) I know my
original post was loaded with "open ends" for such threads to develop.
Personally, I have always preferred the BCE/CE format (long before the
recent political correctness wars), so I am happy to learn that it is
more common than I had thought. Thanks again for your informative
replies.
