To my endless bemusement, I find myself about to hire someone for the
first time.
I have my own ideas about what to look for. However, I'd like to hear
what other people look for when hiring.

I liked the reqs list posted by David Hirschler just today. Here it is
in case you missed it:
Requirements:
- A commitment to meeting the needs of the reader.
- An attitude of assuming responsibility and ownership over projects.
- A desire to increase technical mastery by continuous learning.
- An ability to discern the useful from the superfluous and then
proceed
successfully.
- A belief in following an ethical system of values.
- An ability to work proactively by recognizing what needs to be done,
then doing it.
- An ability to research and gather information, and to analyze using
diagnostic techniques.
- An ability to communicate technical concepts clearly and accurately.
- An ability to relate with other people by building positive
relationships.
- An ability to view technical issues from a variety of perspectives.
