There have been several usability studies done on web editing and layout,
as well as the 'The Web Page Design Cookbook' by Bill Horton et al. You
should be able to find some articles on First Search (OCLC). Contact Dr.
Mike Prasse, UI Director of the usability lab. His E-mail is:
prasse -at- oclc -dot- org -dot- First Search should be able to provide you with some
studies done in this field, which usually drives editorial designers'
specs.
Another good source is the yearly abstract publication from the Human
Interface/Computer Interaction Conference. One needs to weed through the
rich articles of information to focus on one's specific area of interest,
or you'll be off on visual studies which are facinating.
Chicago Manual also as an Electronic Style Manual. It complements their
text writing manual. First, I would contact Mike to direct you to the
section which does searches for your specific area of interest. I
believe that would cut some time down in your research processes.
Others web weavers like myself, can usually recommend sources for
specific client types. This is based on your clients' line of business.
Hope this will get you started. Dr. Prasse is very helpful.
Smokey
P.S. If you contact him, tell the pink pen referred you please.
