Last year, when I needed just such a handly little tool, one of our
programmers wrote me a Tcl program to do the job. I've been using it
since then, and it works like a charm. It does require a Tcl
interpreter, but that is a free download from SUN.

It has no GUI. It does nothing except search and replace on multilple,
unopened files. Because it is Tcl, it runs on all platforms. I use
Unix, NT, and WIndows '95.

If you're interested, I will check with our VP of Engineering to see if
I can send you a copy.
