Teaching Positions
for 1997-98
Department of Rhetoric
UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA
Description
The Department of Rhetoric, University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, receives and
evaluates applications for teaching positions on a continuous basis. Length of
appointments vary from one quarter to one year with possibility of renewal.
Located on the St. Paul campus, the Rhetoric Department offers a BS, MS, MA, and
a Ph.D. in Scientific and Technical Communication. The Department also offers
liberal education courses in writing, speaking, and humanities to students
enrolled in the colleges located on the St. Paul Campus.
Responsibilities
The positions typically require teaching one or more of the following courses:
upper-division professional/technical writing; lower division writing; public
speaking; and/or professional courses in scientific and technical communication.
Courses are offered in the day and evenings.
Appointment, Rank, and Salary
Appointments vary based on departmental needs. Appointments can be for one
quarter or for one year (nine-month appointment) at 37.5%-100% time with
possibility of renewal. Classifications include Teaching Specialist or
Education Specialist, (ABD or Master's degree), or instructor (ABD or Master's
degree), or non-tenure track Assistant Professor (Ph.D.). Benefits are
determined by class number, percent time, appointment type, and duration of
appointment. Salary is based on experience and University guidelines.
Qualifications
Applicants must have earned an MS or MA and be working towards a Ph.D. or have a
Ph.D. in technical communication, composition, English, rhetoric, or related
field. Evidence of successful teaching in the area of technical communication
or related area is preferred.
