The Lone Star Chapter (LSC) of the Society for Technical Communication has
announced that the 1998 Region 5 Conference will be held February 20, 21
and 22 at the Ramada Plaza Hotel in Fort Worth, Texas. Industry leaders
from across the country will present three days of high-tech seminars and
workshops designed to help conference participants hone vital skills. The
conference's theme is "Keeping Up With Technology" and will focus on the
technological advancements critical to a career in technical communication.
The 1998 Region 5 Conference will feature two keynote speakers, Dr. JoAnn
Hackos and James Conklin. Dr. Hackos, President and founder of Comtech,
will kick off the conference. She is recognized internationally for her
expertise in project management, designing effective interfaces and
information, usability testing, on-line documentation, computer-based
training, and managing information-design and development process. Mr.
Conklin, President of IDT Information Development and Training, will close
the technical sessions. He has extensive experience in designing
communication processes and in developing printed and on-line communication
products to support the use of high technology products.
The conference will also offer a networking luncheon and more than 20
presentations from three tracks, including skill building, management
development and professional development. In addition, Region 5
Director-Sponsor Judy Glick-Smith will present a free-of-charge
Professional Leadership Development workshop for all attendees, a
must-attend for anyone in or moving toward a leadership role.
Enhancing Technical Skills
The skills building track includes a broad collection of topics ranging
from technological discussions on website design, Internet search
techniques, multimedia, HTML/Dynamic HTML, indexing, FrameMaker and
producing single-source manuscripts to the intricacies involved in
producing plain language technical communication as well as technical
writing for an international audience.
Sculpting Your Management Potential
The management development track features workshops designed to enhance
your leadership and management skills. Seminars cover such diverse topics
as SAP implementation, recognizing cultural issues in communication,
enhancing interpersonal skills and maximizing the perceived value of
technical communication.
Grooming the Professional
The professional development track focuses on those skills every technical
communicator needs to enhance his or her success. Sessions included in
this track range from time management and creative thinking to education
options, consulting issues and leadership development.

Registration fees are $195 for STC members, $150 for students, and $255 for
